Managing Success Under Duress and Finishing

Uncategorized — By admin on May 31, 2010 at 7:29 am

This was a reflection which happened on May 3 2010.

When I consider self help tips one core pair of issues are self-monitoring and self-reflection.  Self-monitoring requires that you are specific and detailed in recording your own progress on what you do.  Self-reflection allows you to take a broader perspective on how you are doing what you do.  Self-reflection is often undervalued and as a result not done often enough.  It helps you keep on track and continue to negotiate a sense of perspective with both yourself and those in your world.  This is a self-reflection of mine from early May of 2010.

Last night my primary website crashed twice.  My new website gave me fits.  I was up until 3:30 am dealing with it.  My son for the only time this year forgot he had an all school mass.  He didn’t wear the right shirt.  He wanted to avoid detention.  He wanted me to drive him home and then back to school again.  This took an hour and 10 minutes out of my day.

Then my intern didn’t show up.  She is post finals, not surprising.

So, what did I do?

I got right to work.  I am fine tuning the need to close, a need to finish tasks, a need to finish them well.  In psychology this is often called “mastery”.  I do Cogmed Working Memory TrainingTM with my clients with Attention Problems or ADHD or ADD.  I would not be diagnosed in that category, yet running my own practice and business has been a great challenge and I have struggled with a tendency to get disorganized.  Then the tendency to not finish tasks seeps into things.  Since I did Cogmed Working Memory TrainingTM myself I have gotten better at being both organized and completing tasks fully. I have intentionally and consciously nurtured the need to close, the need to finish.  So, when a disruption occurs like one hour and 10 minutes being taken out of my day I am even more resolved to get to work and get things done.

This is what happened.

I called back a prospect who had called me. I made a form for tracking prospects.

I emailed 3 for permission to add them to my auto-responder.  Then one I spoke with gave me permission. I started to add to my list to make it final for this set of auto-responders from mail chimp.

I have more newspaper ads in Indy’s Child.  I am quoted in an article and I have my best ad to date.  I am expecting some response.  I feel some pressure.

I stopped and checked business accounts.

Then to calm and refocus myself, I did heart math with an emotional visualize for 7 minutes.  The visualization is a boy on a ledge looking off in the distance at earth.  As my coherence goes up little sparks of light energy increase and go toward the planet.  I really like this visualization and the music that goes with it…  After my break, I got back to work on my list.

I’ve reset.  Now I have clarity4mind and I can calmly go back to work.

6 hours later:  Finished.  That’s it, finished, a very important word.  I word I used to not use very much.

A word I need to use more.

This was a good day in spite of the fact that it started under duress.

I have set my mind to a “search and finish” mode.

I have internalized the need to complete tasks.

Sometimes it is not convenient for other people in my life, but more on that in another post at a later date.  However, I will also post on the impact of “finishing” on my practice and company.
